Shake Shack, True Food Kitchen Among First Restaurants and Shops Announced for Metropica Project


Metropica, a $1 billion project being built in Sunrise, announced its initial list of restaurants and retailers this week.

The entire development will have 400,000-square-feet of commercial space across its 65 acres, and its retail component is expected to break ground in 2016.

The newly announced lineup:

Shake Shack, a better-burger concept from New York, will open its first Broward County restaurant in Metropica. The chain serves burgers, hot dogs, fries, custard, beer and wine and has stores in Boca Raton, Coral Gables and Central Florida, with more locations across the country and the world.

True Food Kitchen, a health-conscious dinning concept, will open its first Florida store in Metropica. The restaurant currently has stores across Arizona, Georgia, California, Colorado, Illinois, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia.

Pisco y Nazca, a Miami-born eatery from the restaurateurs behind Bulla Gastrobar, was also confirmed for Metropica. The South Florida Business Journal was the first to report that the Peruvian concept from Centurion Restaurant Group is slated to open in the first quarter of 2017 at the development. It will be the restaurant company's first Broward County eatery.

Salsa Fiesta, a Miami-based Mexican fast-casual, will also open another South Florida location in Metropica. It has several stores across Broward and Miami-Dade counties.

Oil and Vinegar, a culinary gift shop, was also confirmed. The international retail store offers gourmet food products and a variety of oil, nut and seed oils.

Kendra Scott, a jewelry store, will open its first Broward County location in Metropica.

Anthropologie, a lifestyle brand with more than 200 locations, will also open its first Broward County store in Metropica.   

Free people, a women's apparel brand, was also confirmed.

Boca Raton-based dine-in movie theater chain iPic will also be among the brands opening its first Broward County location in Metropica. iPic Entertainment President and CEO Hamid Hashemi previously told the Business Journal that the eight-screen, 550-seat movie theater is expected to open by 2017. iPic and Kings Bowl will occupy the development's 75,000-square-foot entertainment section.

"This early collection of tenants will contribute greatly to bring to life the vision for Metropica. After decades of experience in building retail developments and concepts around the nation, our team is positioning Metropica to serve as a Downtown for all of West Broward and the neighboring area with world-class shopping," said Erick Collazo, vice president of development for Metropica Holdings LLC, in the announcement.

Metropica is being built at the edge of Florida Everglades National Park, west of the Sawgrass Mills Mall along Panther Parkway/Northwest 136th Avenue. Its residential component broke ground last month and is expected to be completed in 2017.
